A Night of Grooving and Giving at the Portsmouth Music Hall

Portsmouth, NH — October 22, 2025

It was a night that hit all the right notes — musically and for the community. The Portsmouth Music Hall hosted an unforgettable evening featuring local powerhouse YellowHouse Blues Band and New Orleans-based Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, raising an impressive $65,000 to support Cross Roads House, the Seacoast’s shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Cross Roads House provides shelter, meals, and pathways to stability for our neighbors in need. When local artists and venues step up to support that mission, it reminds us what community really looks like.

Bridget Thompson, Associate Director of Development shared that the idea for the benefit concert grew out of a shared goal: blending Portsmouth’s rich live-music culture with purpose. “Music brings people together — so why not use it to make a real difference?”

The Music: Local Soul Meets New Orleans Groove

At 7:00 sharp, YellowHouse Blues Band lit up the stage with their signature nine-piece blend of blues and rock. Their set roared to life with “Gimme Some Lovin” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” Vocalists Sophie and Johanna traded harmonies and powerhouse leads that had the crowd moving early. The band closed with “Higher Ground,” leaving the hall buzzing with energy and hometown pride.

Following remarks from Cross Roads House leadership, Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen took over — a four-piece blues-funk outfit steeped in rhythm and soul. Cleary’s smoky vocals and masterful keys carried originals from his latest album, pulling the audience into his New Orleans groove. By the time he launched into “Boneyard,” the hall was clapping and swaying in unison — proof that generosity and joy can share the same stage.

Beyond the Music: Community in Action

The funds raised will directly support Cross Roads House programs.  In addition, there are plenty of ways for the community to help — from donating funds or supplies to giving your time.  This season, Cross Roads House especially needs adult gloves, hats, scarves, socks, and cold-weather essentials like cough drops and cold medicine.  Thompson added, “People can support us year-round through donations, volunteering, or attending upcoming events like The Dance Hall’s benefit show on December 20, 2025 or our annual Gala on May 9, 2026 at Wentworth by the Sea.”

WSCA is proud to celebrate local musicians who not only lift spirits but lift their community.
